Moonlight Trees

Paul Zanotti, Moonlight Trees, ( 2000 ) 1,20 M x 85 cm, Opus musivum
Smalti glass, silver leaf smalti glass and Italian marble on 'Hexlite'.
The lunar influence on nature was the inspiration behind this composition. Silver smalti tesserae glow and shimmer behind the stylised silhouetted forms of trees and imaginary fauna.
Tesserae should never be placed at random. The correct application of the rules of construction which exploit andamento ( flow ) and contorno ( contours ) provides aesthetically pleasing visual rhythms with which to engage the eye. Thoughtful spacing plays a vital role in this mechanism just as pauses in musical composition can.
