Perhaps this "new tradition' is due both to the medium's longevity – it is virtually indestructible – and, of course, its unrivalled ability to capture the essence of pictorial artwork. Mosaic immortalises existing art in a beautiful and unique manner. This aesthetic is demonstrated most visibly via the traditional Romano/Byzantine technique ( Opus Musivum ). This is the technique I have been proud to practice for almost 20 years. It's an ancient form of pictorial decoration hailing from antiquity. And it's one that is still seen today in the basilicas of Ravenna, Italy and throughout the classical and Byzantine world. Because all of the materials used are inert, your finished mosaic will remain unchanged for literally generations from the day it is completed. Most who view a mosaic interpretation are in agreement: a pictorial translation elevates a painting, yet respects and maintains its original heart and soul.
